An all-state football and basketball player from Hollis, Rhodes began his college career at Louisiana State University before transferring to Southwestern in 1939. As a Bulldog, he made all-conference as a tackle and was captain of the basketball team. He then entered the United States Air Force in 1942, serving nearly five years with 18 months in the European Theatre. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Major.

He would later teach and coach at Hinton and Watonga before taking over at Tonkawa High School. At Tonkawa his teams won Class B state titles in 1952 and 1953. He would later coach at Blackwell, Sand Springs and eventually Grand Prairie, Texas before retiring in 1974. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1980.
