Bruner was one of the key players who helped lay the early foundation of what would eventually be the future success of the women’s basketball program at SWOSU. A high school all-stater, Bruner averaged more than 38 points a game and helped Erick to the Class B state championship. She continued her career at SWOSU. Although the Bulldogs were non-scholarship and little more than a club team, the squad beat several long-standing programs on their way to a 10-6 record in 1977-78. Bruner averaged 20 points and nine rebounds and set most of the school’s early scoring and rebounding records. Her best game was a 37-point effort against rival Northwestern Oklahoma State. Bruner graduated from SWOSU in 1981. She would later coach 14 years at three Texas panhandle schools -- Mobeetie, McLain and Wheeler.
