The Cement, Okla., native came to Southwestern in 1935 to coach both the football and wrestling teams and experienced almost immediate success. His wrestling teams won AAU titles in 1937 and 1939, leading him to earn Coach of the Year accolades. His 1935 and 1936 wrestling teams featured two Olympic wrestlers in Ralph Teague and Steve England. After serving as coach for 11 years, Surbeck then moved to Eastern Washington University in 1946, where he later retired.
