A Weatherford graduate, Bergner joined Southwestern in 1949 after serving his country in World War II. He was a three-year letterman for the Bulldogs baseball team where he earned all-conference honors each season. He graduated from Southwestern in 1951 and began his teaching and coaching career at Independence before moving to Custer City. He came to Weatherford in 1952 and taught and coached baseball until his retirement in 1982. Doyle was chosen in 1972 as the coach of the North team for the All-State baseball game. His overall baseball record was 510-236, and he led the Eagles to one state title. In addition, he also served as basketball coach with his teams posting a 290-130 record, winning four district championships, four county championships and one regional championship.
