A native of Hollis, Okla., Metcalf returned to his alma mater to serve as head coach of the football team from 1952-1957. Metcalf’s teams won conference crowns in 1954, 1955 and 1957. He compiled a record of 32-21-2 at Southwestern, which at the time was the most wins ever by a school football coach. He coached several future school hall-of-framers including Cecil Perkins, John Buck, Keith Wigginton, and Vern Harris. After SWOSU, Metcalf would return to Hollis to coach the Hollis Tigers football team. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame and received an award for distinguished service in 1971.
