A native of Cheyenne, Dobson was the star on Otis Delaporte’s golf teams in the late 1970’s. He was a three-time all-conference selection and was twice named to the all-district squad. He was also a member of the 1980 team that won the District IX championship and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. Dobson graduated in 1981 from Southwestern and would later qualify and play in one U.S. Amateur, two U.S. Mid-Amateurs and two British Amateur Tournaments. He won the 1985 Oklahoma Association Four-Ball Championship as well as finishing runner-up in the 1984 Oklahoma Amateur Championship.

Dobson is the executive chairman of the Board of Directors for Dobson Communications Corporation, a telecommunications company bases in Oklahoma City, which provides cellular service in 17 states. He is also the co-owner of thoroughbred bay stallion, Caleb’s Posse, which won at the 2011 Breeder’s Cup. Dobson is also a co-owner of Oak Tree National Golf Course.
