SWOSU Women's Basketball is set to play three games this week, beginning with a Monday matchup against Oklahoma Baptist. The contest was originally scheduled for late January but was moved due to winter weather. The Lady Dawgs will also host Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday and Southern Arkansas on Saturday.
Last week, the Lady Bulldogs split their games, defeating rival Northwestern 68-60 to avenge an earlier loss this season before falling to SNU 72-58 on Saturday. A late first-half run by the Crimson Storm allowed them to seize control and carry that momentum through the remainder of the game.
The GAC standings remain tight heading into the final weeks of the regular season. SWOSU sits one game outside the top eight needed to advance to the postseason tournament. Oklahoma Baptist, Southern Arkansas, Arkansas-Monticello, and the Lady Bulldogs make up the bottom four spots in the standings, giving SWOSU multiple key opportunities to secure much-needed wins down the stretch.
Monday: Oklahoma Baptist
SWOSU earned a 69-57 win over Oklahoma Baptist in the Lady Bulldogs' home opener back in December. Another victory over the Bison would be significant in helping SWOSU stay ahead of OBU in the GAC standings as both teams are 7-10 in conference play.
Since joining the GAC, the Lady Dawgs hold a 20-4 record against Oklahoma Baptist and are 8-3 in Shawnee. However, last season SWOSU suffered an 83-52 loss, the largest margin of defeat in the series. Peyton Conde, a transfer from Oklahoma Baptist, went 6-for-6 from beyond the arc in that game, setting career highs in both three-pointers made and points scored with 18.
Oklahoma Baptist averages 67.6 points per game, the seventh-best mark in the conference, while allowing 67.1 points per contest, which ranks ninth in the league. OBU ranks third in the GAC in three-pointers made at seven per game and shoots 30.8 percent from beyond the arc. Jaedyn Getman averages 20 points per game, leading the GAC in scoring and ranking seventh nationally.
Thursday: Arkansas-Monticello
The Cotton Blossoms' lone conference win came against SWOSU in a 71-59 upset in Magnolia. The Lady Dawgs did not make a three-pointer until the fourth quarter and finished just 2-of-11 from beyond the arc. SWOSU also went 13-of-25 at the free-throw line in that matchup.
Arkansas-Monticello is 1-17 in conference play and 2-9 on the road. Since 2012, SWOSU holds a 22-6 series advantage and are 10-1 at home. Under Jeff Zinn, the Lady Dawgs are 5-2 against the Cotton Blossoms.
UAM averages a GAC-low 59.1 points per game and is the only team in the conference scoring under 60 per contest. Its scoring margin of minus 5.4 also ranks last in the league, though its defense sits fifth, allowing just 64.5 points per game. The Cotton Blossoms rank last in the conference in three-pointers made at 4.5 per game and in three-point percentage at 28 percent.
Saturday: Southern Arkansas
Southern Arkansas and the Lady Bulldogs delivered an overtime classic in their first meeting of the season, with SWOSU coming out on top 71-66 despite committing 30 turnovers, the most by any team in a GAC game this year. Elle Papahronis hit the game-tying shot to force overtime and pulled down 20 rebounds, the highest single-game total in the GAC this season.
SAU averages 63.0 points per game, eighth in the GAC, while allowing 62.9 points per contest, fourth-best in the conference. The Muleriders shoot 38.6 percent from the field, which ranks 10th in the league, and hold opponents to just 37.4 percent shooting, the third-best mark in the GAC.
Southern Arkansas enters the week at 7-11 in conference play and has played one more game than the Lady Dawgs. Since joining the GAC, SWOSU holds a 23-4 record against SAU and has won four straight meetings. All four losses have come on the road, as the Lady Dawgs are a perfect 13-0 against the Muleriders in Weatherford.
Notes:
In last week's meeting with Northwestern, Landry Allen blocked 13 NWOSU shots, breaking the GAC all-time single-game record and surpassing her own program record that she set earlier this season. The 13 blocks are also the most recorded in a single game this season across all of Division II.
