SWOSU Women's Basketball has its final non-conference home matchup as No. 7 Lubbock Christian visits the Pioneer Event Center.
The Lady Dawgs played just one game last week, earning a 65-57 win over Missouri Southern to move to 2-1 on the season.
SWOSU and Lubbock Christian are no strangers to each other. They've met six times since 2019, with the Lady Chaps winning all six, including the 2019 Division II National Championship game where LCU defeated the Lady Bulldogs 95-85 in double overtime.
The teams met in Lubbock last season, and the Lady Chaps narrowly escaped an upset bid from SWOSU. The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as 12 and carried the advantage into the fourth quarter, but LCU rallied late to pull out a 67-59 win.
Landry Allen leads the Dawgs in both scoring and shot-blocking. She's averaging 13 points per game, with a season-high 18 coming last week against MSSU. Allen also blocks four shots per game, which ranks fifth nationally. Against the Lions, she set a program record with nine blocks — the most in a single game this season in Division II. She's adding six rebounds per game and 2.7 steals per night as well.
Elle Papahronis, who was named the GAC's first Defensive Player of the Week this season, is averaging a double-double through the first three games, even though she hasn't officially recorded one yet. She's posting 10.7 points along with a team-high 11.3 rebounds per game, which also is second best in the GAC. Her 3.3 steals per outing lead the conference.
As a team, the Lady Dawgs hold the 11th-ranked offense in the GAC but compensate with the fourth-best defense, allowing just 56.3 points per game. SWOSU is limiting opponents to 32% shooting from the field and 24.3% from three — both the second-lowest marks in the conference. The Lady Bulldogs lead the GAC in rebounding at 43.3 per game and rank second in offensive boards at 15.7. Papahronis is a major factor there, averaging six offensive rebounds per game, a top-10 mark nationally.
SWOSU also averages a conference-best six blocks per game and sits second in steals at 11.67 per contest. The Lady Bulldogs have turned the ball over 65 times through three games and forced just 55 for a -3.3 turnover margin through three games, a reversal of last season's +6.6 per game turnover margin.
Lubbock Christian enters the matchup at 6-0 and has already defeated two GAC teams this season, rolling past SNU 72-49 before topping Southern Arkansas 73-61. The Lady Chaps are averaging just under 70 points per game and outscoring opponents by 13.3 per outing. They're shooting 45% from the field and 35.7% from three.
Last season, LCU finished 32-5, falling in the Lone Star Conference championship game to No. 1-ranked Texas Woman's in overtime. They went on to reach the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight before being knocked out by Pittsburg State. The Lady Chaps have made eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
