FORT SCOTT, Kan. – SWOSU Rodeo competed in Kansas for the second consecutive event to begin the spring season. The women's team finished fourth while the men were 10th.
 
It is just the second rodeo this season, out of six, in which a men's or women's team did not claim the top spot. However, individually SWOSU still had an event winner thanks to Sadie Wolaver's barrel racing performance.
 
Wolaver won the long round with a 14.3 second run and finished fourth in the short go with a 14.5 time. Combined, the two times were fast enough to award her the average title for the event.
 
Wolaver's running mate, Abby Hepper, posted her fastest time of 14.61 seconds in the long round and finished sixth in the average. Between Hepper and Wolaver, a SWOSU Barrel Racer has won three of the six barrel racing events this season. 
 
In Goat Tying, Cheyenne VandeStouwe tied for fourth in the first round and was fifth in the short round. She finished fifth overall.
 
On the men's side, Marley Berger was able to win the long round in Calf Roping with a 10.0 second time but did not register a score in the short round and finished fifth overall.
 
Saddle Bronc riders Brody McAbee and Tanner Edwards were next to each other in the final standings in fifth and sixth respectively. McAbee finished inside the top-5 in both rounds and was able to edge Edwards despite Edwards' 74-point ride being the highest score of either rider in either round.   
 
Through six rodeos, SWOSU has two men atop the Central Plains Region standings – Dustin Sanchez in Bull Riding and McAbee in Saddle Bronc.
 
The women, who lead the region in team points collectively, do not have anyone ranked first in an event but have both Hepper (Barrel Racing) and VandeStouwe (Goat Tying) ranked second.
 
Action will continue for the rodeo team March 31-April 2 where they'll make trip number three this spring up to Kansas to compete at the Garden City Rodeo. The 50th Annual SWOSU Rodeo held in Weatherford will be two weeks later, April 13-15.
