MANHATTAN, Kan. – After a strong fall that saw the SWOSU Women's Rodeo Team earn two titles in four events, they were right back to that success this past weekend in the first rodeo of the spring schedule after taking home the top spot at the Kansas State Rodeo.
The women were led by their barrel racing one-two punch of Abby Hepper and Sadie Wolaver. Hepper got third in the long round (12.42 seconds) and won the short go (12.44 seconds) to earn her second average title this season. Meanwhile Wolaver was right behind her in second in the average thanks to times of 12.59 and 12.47 seconds.
In Goat Tying, Chenoa VandeStouwe posted a 5.9 second time in the short round and finished fourth in the average. Bailey Weeks notched a top-10 finish in ninth.
VandeStouwe also finished 10th in Breakaway Roping.
SWOSU began the spring season sitting atop the Central Plains Women's Team Standings and will extend their points margin even further from the field following another successful finish.
On the men's side, Brody McAbee won the Saddle Bronc with scores of 74 and 79. Teammate Tim Troyer posted nearly identical rides of 67 and 66 points to earn himself fifth.
Luke Crompton, teamed up with a competitor from another school, finished second in Team Roping. The duo won the short round with a 5.6 second run and placed sixth in the long round.
The men's team currently ranks fourth in the regional standings.
Up next for both teams will be the Fort Scott Rodeo held March 10-12. The 50th Annual SWOSU Rodeo will be April 13-15 in Weatherford.
