SWOSU Women's Basketball opens the Great American Conference slate with Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday, November 30 and then hosts Southeastern Oklahoma State for their first GAC home contest on Saturday, December 2.
Â
The Lady Bulldogs kicked off the year in style with a 63-58 win over Washburn, their first win in a season opener since the 2020-2021 season. They are recently coming off of two close losses in the Lone Star Conference Crossover to nationally ranked Lubbock Christian and Texas Permian Basin.
Â
Oklahoma Baptist enters the game at 3-3, winning three of their last four contests. OBU holds three common opponents with SWOSU through their first six games, with the Bison going 1-2 in those games. Last season the Bulldogs and Bison split the season series 1-1. The December 1, 2022 loss broke a 14-game win streak SWOSU held over OBU.
Â
Southeastern Oklahoma State is currently 4-2 on the young season. Their two losses have come from teams with a combined 11-1 record. SWOSU also split the 2022-23 season series with Southeastern 1-1. The loss in Durant last season snapped a seven-game winning streak versus the Savage Storm, the longest streak for either team in SWOSU's D-II era. It will be the first true road game for the Savage Storm. Last season they were 2-10 away from their home court.
Â
SWOSU's offense approach continues to be focused on the long ball. They rank 15th in Division II in three-point attempts per game. Defensively, the Lady Bulldogs hound the opposition. They are top 25 nationally in turnovers forced per game and rank 7th in turnover margin.
Â
Four Lady Dawgs scored in double figures against UTPB, including a career night from freshman
Chloe Cantrell. She put in 11 points, four rebounds, and knocked down three three-point shots in the losing effort. SWOSU also scored a season high 65 points versus the Falcons, after hitting 12 three-pointers.
Â
Averi Zinn is having a great start to the season as the lead ballhandler for the Lady Bulldogs. She is second in the GAC in assists per game (4.4) and leading the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.8).
Mason Jones has been a big contributing transfer early in the year. She is averaging 9.4 points per game, second highest on the team, and is shooting a team high 41% from deep.
