COLBY, Kan. – The SWOSU Rodeo Team traveled north to Kansas this weekend and opened the new season strong with a first-place finish from the men and a fourth-place finish on the women's side.  
 
The team had multiple event winners. Brody McAbee (Saddle Bronc) and Dustin Sanchez (Bull Riding) both won the average for the men, while Libby Berger's third-place finishes in both Barrel Racing and Breakaway allowed her to claim the Women's All-Around title.
 
For the men, McAbee's teammate Timothy Troyer gave him push in Saddle Bronc this weekend. Troyer was tied with McAbee after the long round after both penciled rides of 78 points, but it was McAbee who edged out the short round with an 81 in his final ride to win it.
 
Marley Berger, the Central Plains Region Champion in 2021, tied for the win in the Calf Roping long round with a 10.8 second run and ended up third overall after an 11.0 second short round time.
 
Sanchez collected 66 points on his first bull ride before boosting his score to 76 in the short round to win his event.
 
For the women, outside of Berger it was Cheyenne VandeStouwe who shined as a top performer this weekend. The newcomer finished second in Goat Tying thanks to a solid 7.0 time in the opening round.
 
Last year's Barrel Racing National Champion, Sadie Wolaver, finished inside the top-10 with equal eighth-place runs in both rounds.
 
SWOSU will break this weekend and will return to the circuit on September 29 when they compete at the Southeastern Rodeo held in Durant, Oklahoma.
