WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The SWOSU women's basketball team has started preparing for the upcoming GAC slate this weekend. It kicks off with two games before the week's end.
SWOSU will host Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday to open their GAC schedule at 5:30 PM. On Saturday, the Lady Dawgs will take a trip south to Southeastern Oklahoma State. This game will be at 1:00 PM.
The Season So Far
- SWOSU women's basketball entered a new era this season, welcoming new head coach Jeff Zinn.
- The Lady Dawgs come into conference play after a 0-4 start in the first four non-conference games.
- This is the first time SWOSU has been winless through four games since the 2015-2016 season.
- Stiff competition has been one of the key reasons for this, playing two nationally ranked teams through four games.
- The past two games have been the aforementioned nationally ranked games: a 79-51 road loss to then No. 6 West Texas A&M and a 73-67 home defeat to then No. 18 Lubbock Christian.
- Morgan Smith has played well on both sides of the ball regardless, averaging 14.8 ppg, 34.3 mpg, 1.5 spg, and 0.3 bpg, all team highs.
- Shamica Smith is SWOSU's leader on the glass, averaging 6.8 rpg and adding 6.5 ppg as well.
- Macy Gore is averaging a team high 4.0 apg; that mark has her sitting at fourth in the GAC for apg. She is also tied for sixth in the conference in assist to turnover ratio (1.8).
- SWOSU will look to improve from the early slow start, coming in 12th in the conference with 59.8 ppg and giving up 73.0 ppg to opponents.
- Taking care of the ball has been a priority for the Lady Dawgs this season, averaging a GAC best 12.3 turnovers this season.
A Look At Oklahoma Baptist
- SWOSU took both contests versus OBU last season, 85-64 in Weatherford on December 4 and 71-68 in Shawnee on February 5.
- The Bison enter Thursday at 3-2 on the young season.
- Both SWOSU and OBU played in the GAC/MIAA Crossover to open the year, giving them two shared opponents already. Pittsburg State defeated both, while OBU defeated Washburn in a low scoring affair for their first win of the season.
- The Bison are led by guard Erika Ankney who is averaging a Bison leading 20 ppg, 4.3 apg, and 2.3 spg, albeit in only three of their five games played.
- Jaedyn Getman is right behind her with 15.2 ppg and a team high 4.8 rpg.
- OBU is scoring 60.8 ppg, just one point higher than SWOSU.
- They shoot the ball efficiently though, currently standing at 3rd in the GAC in team field goal percentage at 43.3% from the field.
- One area that the Lady Bulldogs can take advantage of is rebounding the ball. The Bison are dead last in the GAC in team rpg (27.3).
A Look At Southeastern Oklahoma State
- SWOSU also swept Southeastern last season: 72-66 at home on December 2 and 64-50 in Durant on February 7.
- Southeastern is currently 2-3, but will be one win better or one loss worse on Saturday as they visit Southern Nazarene to open their GAC season on Thursday night.
- SWOSU comes into Saturday on a seven-game winning streak versus the Savage Storm. The last defeat SWOSU took was in Durant on November 23, 2019.
- Briley Moon is their leading scorer at 20.2 ppg, good for second in the GAC so far.
- Caitlin Kobiske is their next highest scorer at 11.8 ppg. She is the only other Savage Storm player averaging double digits on the season.
- Southeastern is averaging a respectable 63.6 ppg as a team through five games.
- The flip side of that is they give up 67.8 ppg to opponents, giving them the second worst scoring margin in the GAC (-4.2).
- The three ball is a strength of this squad, having 34 3FGM as a team. Moon has claimed almost 40% of the teams' three point makes, with 13 on the year.
- Southeastern could be susceptible to being beat on the glass, as they have the second worst rebounding margin the GAC (-11.2).
