KANSAS CITY, Mo. – SWOSU Men's Golf came up just shy of making a return trip to the NCAA Division II National Championships after finishing fifth at the Midwest/Central Super Regional, which concluded on Saturday in Kansas City.
The Bulldogs were right on the cut line for the entire week, sitting tied for fourth place after the first round and fifth going into the final round, with the top four teams clinching a berth in the National Championships. SWOSU went into Saturday one shot behind Arkansas Tech for fourth and they eclipsed Henderson State, who entered in third, but Washburn jumped the Bulldogs with a team score of one-under in the final round and claimed the fourth and final advancing position along with Central Missouri, Indianapolis and Arkansas Tech.
Senior
Kason Cook closed out his season in style, finishing 10th at one-over par, which included a one-under in the first round.
Heston Brown had the low round of the week with a 67 on Friday and he finished three-over for the week and tied for 13th.
Gregor Weck was six-over and tied for 23rd, while
Anders Strand (T-45) and
Gustavo Tineo (T-63) rounded out the scoring.
"I'm very proud of our guys, I thought we played as well as we have all year this weekend and this is the time of year you want to be at your best," SWOSU Head Coach
Brad Fleetwood said. "These guys battled to the very end and played well all week to give themselves a shot to advance to Nationals, so it hurts to come up short of that goal but I couldn't be more proud of their effort."
SWOSU Men's Golf has now competed in eight straight NCAA Division II Super Regionals and the fifth-place finish is tied for the second-best placing for the Bulldogs, matching their finish from 2013, which was Fleetwood's first season in Weatherford.
