HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – SWOSU Men's Golf placed third at the 2021 Great American Conference Championships, which were played on Monday-Tuesday at Hot Springs Country Club. At the conclusion of the event the Bulldogs had two players earn All-GAC recognition while two also claimed GAC Academic distinction.
Gregor Weck and
Anders Strand tied for 14th place in the championships at five-over par for the three-round event. Weck gradually improved in each round and shot two-under par on Tuesday while Strand had SWOSU's low round of the tournament with a four-under 68 in Round 2 before shooting even par on Tuesday to offset an 81 in the opening round.
Heston Brown finished one shot behind the leading duo and
Kason Cook was one shot behind Brown at seven-over par.
Gustavo Tineo had two scoring rounds in the tournament, including a 73 on Tuesday and placed 27th at nine-over for the week.
Arkansas Tech had each of the top-three placing individuals and cruised to the conference championship by 13 shots over Henderson State. SWOSU was a distant third, finishing 18 strokes behind HSU.
In addition to their top finishes, Weck and Strand earned spots on the All-Great American Conference teams for their performance throughout the regular season. Weck was named a Second Team All-GAC selection while Strand received Honorable Mention for his play during his freshman season. Additionally, Weck earned the GAC Elite Scholar Athlete award as the player with the highest GPA in the championship field, while Cook was also recognized as a Distinguished Scholar Athlete.
Weck (Wiesbaden, Germany) picks up his second consecutive All-GAC selection following an Honorable Mention honor in 2019. Entering the GAC Championships, he had competed in six tournaments this season with four top-15 finishes, highlighted by a fifth-place finish at the Washburn Invitational, for which he was named the GAC Golfer of the Week on March 24. In 16 rounds of play this season, he had an average score of 73.5 including six rounds of even par or lower. In addition to his competitive excellence, Weck has maintained a 3.97 GPA during his time at SWOSU while majoring in Psychology.
Strand (Solrod Strand, Denmark) earns All-GAC Honorable Mention following his elongated freshman season. He appeared in four tournaments during the season and in 11 rounds of competition had an average score of 75.1 strokes with two rounds of even par or lower. His best round of the season came on Monday with his four-under 68 in the second round of the GAC Championships.
Cook (Hydro, Okla.) concludes his senior season with the GAC's Distinguished Scholar Athlete, which goes to players in the field with a cumulative GPA of 3.70 or greater and 70 or more college credit hours. Cook has already earned his Bachelors Degree in Business from SWOSU and did so with a 3.92 GPA and he's currently maintaining a 4.00 while pursuing his Masters of Business Administration.
SWOSU Men's Golf entered the GAC Tournament ranked No. 9 in the Central Region, with the top eight teams being selected to compete at the NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Super Regional on May 6-8 in Kansas City, Missouri. The Bulldogs will learn their fate on Friday evening as the NCAA announces the tournament field at 5:00 pm with a press release at NCAA.com.
