GOODWELL, Okla. – The Lady Bulldog basketball team rebounded from their worst loss of the season with their biggest win of the year, a 114-74 victory over Panhandle State on Monday night at Oscar Williams Field House in Goodwell.
After keeping things close in the early going, SWOSU blew the game open with a 14-0 run over a stretch of three minutes, going on top 20-5 just over six minutes into the game. The Lady Bulldogs only allowed OPSU to get within 10 points once more the remainder of the half, opening up a wide 56-32 margin at the break.
Much of the same ensued in the second half as SWOSU scored the first six points and opened up a 30-point lead that they maintained for most of the half. The Lady Bulldogs cracked the 100-point mark with six minutes to play and it appeared the school record for the NCAA Division II era of 118 points might be in jeopardy before the pace slowed up.
Seven players reached double figures for SWOSU, led by
Sarina Sayama for the fourth time in the past five games. Sarina scored 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench while
Michelle Fisher added 17 points and
Jessica Penner put in 15.
Amelia Tyree reached double figures for the first time in her career, notching 13 points after connecting on 8-of-9 free throw attempts and two field goals.
Others to reach the 10-point plateau were
Taryn Sayama (12),
Kylie Boggess (11) and
Chelsea Bates (10). As a team, SWOSU shot 52.2% from the field and connected on 15-of-36 three pointers with their bench outscoring that of OPSU 57-33.
SWOSU improves to 5-3 with the victory, finishing the non-conference portion of the schedule 3-3. The Lady Bulldogs will now focus on Great American Conference play the rest of the way, which resumes on Thursday evening at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse against Southern Nazarene.
