Velilla Freshman of the Year; Three Lady Bulldogs Named All-GAC

TULSA, Okla.  SWOSU Women's Golf had three individuals earn All-Great American Conference honors, announced Monday night at the GAC Awards Banquet. Maria Velilla was named Freshman of the Year while also earning First Team honors alongside Freya Sala, while Daniela Espinoza was named to the Honorable Mention team.

Velilla (Calatayud, Spain) is the first Lady Bulldog since 2015 (Emily Folsom) to take home the Freshman of the Year award. She ranks fourth in the Central Region and has recorded six top-10 finishes in nine tournaments this year. Velilla placed in the top three in four events, including earning medalist honors at the MWSU Women's Holiday Inn Express Invitational, where she won by three strokes over teammate Sala as the Lady Dawgs claimed the team title by 11 strokes. She holds a scoring average of 74.9, and her lowest finish came at the Newman Fall Invite, where she shot 1-under to place second.

Sala (Mexico City, Mexico) is now a back-to-back unanimous First Team All-GAC selection and has earned three total all-conference honors after receiving a Second Team nod in 2024. She finished in the top seven in seven of her eight tournaments. Sala closed the regular season ranked seventh in the Central Region with a 74.7 scoring average. She recorded five top-five finishes on the year, with her best result being a second-place finish behind Velilla at the MWSU Women's Holiday Inn Express Invitational. Sala was one of just three unanimous women's selections.

Espinoza (Culiacán, Mexico) earned the first All-GAC honor of her career, being named an Honorable Mention selection. She recorded five top-20 finishes in nine tournaments, with her best result coming at the SMSU Classic, where she placed sixth and helped the Lady Dawgs to a third-place team finish. On the year, she holds a 77.6 scoring average and is currently ranked 50th in the Central Region.

Academically, Espinoza and London Wilson were named to the GAC Academic Honor Roll, awarded to student-athletes who maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA and have completed at least one year of full-time college residency.

The 2026 Women's Golf GAC Championship is currently underway at Page Belcher GC (Stone Creek) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The tournament will run through Wednesday, with teams playing a total of three rounds.
