Lady Dawgs Capture Newman Invitational Behind Espinoza, Velilla One-Two Finish

ANDOVER, Kan. – SWOSU Women's Golf captured the team title at the Newman Invitational, led by a one-two finish from Daniela Espinoza and Maris Velilla.

After winning three tournaments during the 2025-26 season, the Lady Dawgs opened the new year with a victory in just their second action of the season. Espinoza and Velilla finished first and second, marking the second consecutive year SWOSU has had a one-two finish, after Velilla and Sala accomplished the feat at the Central Region Preview last season.

SWOSU (+6) won the event by five strokes over Wayne State (+11), while Central Oklahoma rounded out the top three at +12 after 36 holes.

Espinoza played nearly flawless golf throughout the tournament, bogeying only the first and final holes of her second round after opening the tournament with a bogey-free, three-under 68. She followed with a 69 (-2) to finish at five under par, recording seven birdies and just two bogeys. The victory marks the first of her career and her lowest score to par as a Lady Dawg. She finished one under on par-4s, tied for second-best in the field, while her three-under mark on par-5s was tied for the best in the field.

Velilla led after the opening round, firing a 67 (-4), before closing with an even-par 71 to finish at four under. The score marks the lowest of her career. Dating back to last season, Velilla now has five top-three finishes. She totaled nine birdies throughout the tournament, including seven on par-4s, the most in the field in both categories.

London Wilson finished at +3 for the tournament, totaling six birdies and shooting an even-par 71 in her final round. Both her final score and her T-10 finish marked the best of her three-year career. Wilson recorded three birdies and just one bogey in her opening round, with a 10 on the par-5 second serving as a setback. She finished tied for first in the field on par-3s, playing them at three under for the tournament.

Birdie Brown (+12) and Jaime Meth (+20) rounded out the Lady Dawgs' lineup. Brown posted rounds of 78 and 76 while totaling three birdies, while Meth recorded 20 pars over the 36 holes.

Nerea Anton competed as an individual, recording three birdies and an impressive 73 in her opening round. She finished the tournament at +11 after 36 holes.

SWOSU's next action will be in Weatherford, as both the Men's and Women's Golf teams host the Perkins Cup against Northwestern at Prairie West Golf Club next Thursday, October 1, in a one-day match-play event.
