Women’s Rodeo Secures Central Plains Region Championship at OPSU

GUYMON, Okla. – SWOSU's women's team won a third consecutive rodeo over the weekend to close out the regular season circuit, and in doing so clinched the program's third Central Plains Region Championship in four years.

At Panhandle State's rodeo hosted in Guymon, Oklahoma this weekend, Cheyenne VandeStouwe won the average title in Goat Tying for a second consecutive rodeo after tying for first in both rounds. She finished as the region's Reserve Champion in Goat Tying, while also being crowned the region's Women's All-Around Champion.

In Barrel Racing, Hadley Tate was third at OPSU with a fourth-place finish in the long round and a second (17.51) in the short go and finished as the region's Reserve Champion in barrels.

Braylee Ward, named SWOSU's women's rookie of the year at last night's SWOSU Athletic awards ceremony, won the long round in barrels and was second in the average at OPSU just above Tate.

Libby Berger finished seventh in both rounds at OPSU. She was fourth in the region in barrels and had her horse Tagg named the Central Plains Region Horse of the Year.

VandeStouwe, Tate, and Berger will represent SWOSU Women's Rodeo at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in June.

On the men's side, SWOSU had Wyatt Bentz finish 11th in the long round and that held up for a matching average spot after he did not clock a time in the short go. Heston Harrison, SWOSU's male rookie of the year, had his best weekend after riding both broncs he was paired with in Saddle Bronc. He was 72.5 in the long round, good for second, and fourth in the short go with a 63-point ride. The team went on to finish ninth for a fourth straight rodeo.

Dustin Sanchez will represent SWOSU in Bull Riding at the CNFR for a second consecutive year after ending the year fourth in the region.

This year's CNFR will be June 9-15 in Casper, Wyoming. The women's team finished fourth last year at the CNFR, in follow up to back-to-back Reserve National Championships in '22 and '21.
