WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The SWOSU Softball team was on hiatus from GAC foes for the midweek games, but gets right back into the thick of their conference slate for the weekend series. Southern Nazarene will come to Weatherford for a three-game series, beginning on Friday with a 4:00 pm game.
SWOSU picked up some much needed victories over the last few games. They are 2-1 in their last three, picking up wins over Arkansas Tech and Fort Hays State. The wins came from playing small ball. SWOSU only had three extra base hits in the two wins, but scored 10 runs in those games. The defense and pitching have been solid as of late and the batting has stepped up to support the defensive output.
Southern Nazarene rolls into the weekend at 17-18 overall and 6-10 in the GAC. They are sitting at ninth in the standings, just one game back in the win column from the cutoff spot for the GAC Tournament. They are on a three-game skid currently and are 1-5 in their last six games. They bat well, as two Crimson Storm players rank top 10 in the GAC in batting average. 3B Hailey Evans also holds the GAC home run crown for the moment at seven homers this season. SWOSU holds a small edge in the all time series against SNU. The Bulldogs are 28-26 against the Crimson Storm, including a sweep in the most recent action in Weatherford.
Brianna Cryer and
Taryn Westbrook are the workhorses of the SWOSU rotation. They both rank top 10 in the GAC in innings pitched this year. Cryer is also sixth in the GAC in looking strikeouts with 20 on the season. Both will need to stay solid in the circle for success this weekend.
Skyla McPhillips was a hero for SWOSU in the midweek against Fort Hays State. She crushed a double to the wall for the game winning two RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the Tigers down. After a hot start to the season, she slowed down up until Tuesday. This performance should give her a confidence boost heading into this series.
