ALVA, Okla. – In the final rodeo of the fall, SWOSU's women got average wins from Libby Berger in barrel racing and Shyann Gates in breakaway roping and went on to finish first as a team at Northwestern Oklahoma State's rodeo.
 
The men's team got an 83-point ride from Dustin Sanchez in bull riding but finished ninth in the team standings.
 
It's the second time SWOSU's women's team has taken home the top spot this fall. In four rodeos, the team has finished no worse than third and had at least one competitor take home a win in the average. 
 
Berger was second in the long round after a 13.03 second ride and won the short round with a 12.65 time. It's her second win in barrel racing this season. Gates posted near exact times in both of her rounds with different results. She was tied for fifth after the long round with a 2.4 second run and won the short go with a 2.5 to earn her first breakaway average victory.
 
Other strong performances from the women's side included Cheyenne VandeStouwe and Bailey Weeks who finished back-to-back in second and third in goat tying.
 
Sanchez's 83 points in the long round put him second in both the round, and eventually the average. It's his best showing so far in the 2023-24 college circuit. 
 
Xavier Davis (tie down) and Cadon Remington (team roping) both finished sixth in the average. Blake Chowning was seventh in bareback.
 
The college rodeo season now pauses until February. SWOSU will return to action February 16-18 at Kansas State and will take part in six rodeos this spring through the end of April. The 51st Annual SWOSU Rodeo will take place April 11-13 in Weatherford.
