WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball split with Southern Nazarene on Friday in the opening day of the GAC series. SNU claimed the game one victory 7-6 before the Bulldogs bounced back to earn the 8-6 win in the nightcap.
The two will be back on the field tomorrow with the final doubleheader of the series scheduled for a noon start time.
Game One
SNU 7, SWOSU 6
Box Score (html)
The Bulldogs led the Crimson Storm 3-0 heading into the fifth inning and things looked to be in order with
Rileigh Ricken pitching well in the circle, but four errors on just two plays in the top of the fifth inning came back to bite the Dawgs.
SNU scored six runs in that half inning (all unearned) and took a 6-3 lead – their first lead of the game. They tacked on another run in the following inning and eventually went on to win game one by a final score of 7-6.
SWOSU trailed 7-4 heading into their final at-bat and didn't go down quietly after scoring a pair of runs on an RBI single from
Sidney Kirk. With two outs, the hit extended the game but the Dawgs couldn't keep things rolling after stranding the game-tying run on first base to end the game.
Kinsey Skroh finished 2-for-4 with her first home run of the season and also hit a double in the contest to help lead the offense. Ricken (L, 2-11) allowed just one earned run in her outing and struck out two in 5.0 innings of work.
Game Two
SWOSU 8, SNU 6
Box Score (html)
SWOSU trailed 4-1 headed to the bottom of the third inning before a three spot on the scoreboard knotted things back up.
Sidney Kirk and
Samantha Householder both homered in the inning and drove in all three of the runs.
After SNU regained the lead the next half inning at 5-4, the Dawgs snagged the lead back for good in the bottom half of the fourth after plating three runs including the 2-RBI go-ahead single off of the bat of
Allyson Gafford with two outs.
Now winning 7-5, SWOSU tacked on an insurance run in the fifth to make it 8-5. The Crimson Storm made things interesting in the sixth inning after already scoring one run, but
Sidney Kirk (in relief) got out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the 8-6 score.
Miranda Grover (W, 3-5) pitched 5.1 innings in the circle and earned her team leading third win on the year. Kirk also earned her first save of the season after coming in to throw the final 1.2 innings of the game.
Householder, Gafford, Skroh, and
Amanda Moreno all notched a pair of hits each in game two.
