NORMAN, Okla. – For the second time in as many seasons, SWOSU Golf's
Stefan Idstam and
Marques Gomez have been named to the Srixon/Cleveland Division II Golf All-America Scholars team. The teams were announced on Wednesday afternoon by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 78.0 in NCAA Division II and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
A new record number of student-athletes earned All-America Scholar status this season around the country including 260 in Division I, 108 in Division II and 20 in NAIA. Additionally, 46 honorees were added to the previously released Division III Srixon/Cleveland All-America Scholars.
Idstam, a senior, was previously named the 2016-17 Great American Conference Player of the Year and SWOSU's Male Athlete of the Year already this year. Gomez, also a senior, earned a second-consecutive All-GAC Honorable Mention nod following the conclusion of his final season competing for the Bulldogs.
The duo remains the second and third players to reach All-America Scholar status under the direction of head coach
Brad Fleetwood, along with Wouter MyBurgh, a two-time All-America Scholar in 2012 and 2013.
"I am very proud of Stefan and Marques for their outstanding achievements in the class room that has allowed them both to earn their second consecutive All-American Scholar award," Fleetwood said. "Both of these guys are leaving behind a strong legacy for future players to come."
