WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Erica Brunet opened the scoring for the Bulldogs as SWOSU posted a three-goal master class to the excitement of the home crowd in SWOSU's home opener at the Athletic Complex over the visiting Central Oklahoma Bronchos. It was the Bulldogs' second win over UCO in program history, with both victories coming under head coach
Mark Persson.
The attacking duo of
Cori Kelly and
Jasmine Heffley again made their mark on the game, with each scoring their second goal in as many games for the Bulldogs. Kelly's coolly curled shot past UCO's Elle Stover doubled the SWOSU lead, while Heffley took advantage of a well-worked cross by
Samantha Nunez to add the final exclamation point as the Bulldogs equaled their win total from 2014 in just three games.
Brunet opened the scoring in the 30th minute from the penalty spot earned by
Olivia Butler. The speedy sophomore winger was taken down from behind in the box by Katie Killion who received a yellow card for her troubles. Brunet, a freshman, calmly slotted the ball into the lower right corner, beating UCO's Stover despite guessing the right direction, to open her SWOSU account.
SWOSU doubled the advantage in the 38th minute thanks to Kelly. A great run on the blind side of UCO's central defensive pairing was met by a through ball by
Eva Rule. All Kelly had to do from there was curl her shot just to the right of Stover to find the back of the net.
Though Central Oklahoma started in possession in the second half, they were unable to find a way back into the game as an all-freshmen back line marshalled by
Kylee Bertrand and
Dajhane Turner extinguished most threats. For those attacks that made their way through,
Courtney Flores proved more than equal to the task, recording eight of her 11 saves in the second half.
Again it was the Bulldogs who would find joy, this time thanks to the teamwork of Heffley and Nunez in the 78th minute. A streaking run by Nunez caused a panic for the Bronchos defense. SWOSU's No. 9 saw the defense crashing in on her, and her cross from the outside of her foot was latched onto by Heffley for the first-time shot back across the face of goal and into the right bottom corner.
With the 3-0 score line, Flores picked up her first shutout of the season. It was the first shutout for SWOSU since a 1-0 victory at home against East Central last season.
The Bulldogs move to 2-1 on the season as a result of the win. SWOSU heads back on the road for a match with West Texas A&M on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2 pm.
