Slow Start for SWOSU Volleyball on Friday

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The 2014 volleyball season is off to a rough start for the Bulldogs, who suffered two, three-set defeats on Friday at the Midwestern State Hampton Inn-vitational. The day opened with a quick defeat against No. 10 Washburn before Molloy College of New York handed SWOSU their second loss.

Perennial NCAA Division II powerhouse Washburn showed why they are ranked tenth nationally entering the season with a thorough defeat of the Bulldogs in the opener by a count of 25-10, 25-12, 25-15. Washburn forced SWOSU into 20 hitting errors and a negative hitting percentage for the match while adding 12 service aces in the match.
 
SWOSU was led by Carly Zak, who had six kills but also six errors to even out her hitting percentage. Joey Collins was the only Bulldog to hit positively for the match, finishing with three kills and two errors in 19 attack attempts. Taylor VanderWerff (three) and Shayne Haley (two) added the other kills for the match. Kaila Lancaster gave SWOSU 12 digs from the libero position while Kiley Brennfoerder led the Dawgs with three blocks.

Errors again hampered the Bulldogs in their second match as they barely managed a hitting percentage on the positive side and Molloy rolled to a 25-10, 25-22, 25-20 victory. The best chance for SWOSU came in the second set when they took a 20-19 lead late before Molloy rallied off three straight points and finished on a 6-2 spurt to take control.
 
Collins led the Dawgs with seven kills while Haley added six and Brandy Mader had five. Mader was very efficient with her offense, committing just one error for a .444 hitting percentage, while also adding 20 assists in the match. Lancaster again held down the defense with 10 digs while Mader and VanderWerff had a team-best two blocks apiece.
 
 
The Bulldogs look to salvage their weekend trip with a pair of matches on Saturday. They will face tournament-host Midwestern State at 11:30 am before a meeting with Colorado State-Pueblo at 4:30 pm.
