Softball Splits Opener with Arkansas Tech

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU showed their resiliency on Friday, responding from a close loss in the first game and defeating Arkansas Tech 4-1 to split the doubleheader. ATU won the first game 2-1 before the Bulldogs came back to win game two and remain tied in the GAC standings with the Golden Suns.

After scoring in the bottom of the first inning, the Bulldogs offense failed to threaten again until the final inning. With two outs in the seventh, pinch runner Kylee Morgan was standing on second base when a hard hit ground ball by Ashley Dunigan was snagged by the ATU second baseman. Morgan rounded third and headed for home, where she was thrown out to end the game.
 
SWOSU managed just five hits in the game, with two coming in the final inning. They scored in the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice hit by Nikki Brandt that brought Dunigan in to score. Julianne Martinez allowed just five hits and two runs to the Golden Suns, who scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh. Martinez took the loss, falling to 6-10 on the year.

Arkansas Tech scored in the top of the first inning, but didn't record a hit until the fourth hit as Molly Vivo kept the Golden Suns in check to earn her second straight win. Dunigan singled to lead off the first inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Adrienne Martinez to tie the game after an inning.
 
While Vivo was holding down ATU, the Bulldogs offense was recording 11 hits and pushing across runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings despite leaving eight runners on base. Dunigan, Brandt, Kendall Smith and Courtney Miller each had two hits in the effort while Makensy Payne added an RBI groundout in the second.
 
Vivo earned the win, improving to 2-5, after pitching a complete-game one hitter and not allowing an earned run despite walking seven batters.
 
 
The Bulldogs are now 10-22 on the year and they stay tied with the Golden Suns in the conference standings as both teams possess 6-14 GAC marks. They will complete the series on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
