Softball Snaps Skid with Split against Minnesota-Duluth

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – A game one loss to Minnesota-Duluth extended the SWOSU softball team's losing skid to nine games, but the Bulldogs quickly turned it around and defeated UMD 5-4 to split the doubleheader and snap the winless streak.

Starting pitcher Molly Vivo had three hits and an RBI for SWOSU in the opener but it wasn't enough offense to overcome Duluth, who got two home runs and three RBI from their cleanup hitter.
 
After getting down 3-0, Vivo scored SWOSU's first run in the fourth on an RBI single by Jordan Haney. An RBI single by Vivo in the fifth plated Ashley Dunigan and got SWOSU within one before a solo homer by Duluth in the top of the seventh provided them with an insurance run.
 
Vivo took the loss after allowing eight hits and three earned runs in 6.1 innings of work and she falls to 0-5 on the year.

Adrienne Martinez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to put SWOSU on top and the Bulldogs added three runs in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Martinez had an RBI single in the third before Ashley Filer hit a two-run double into the right center gap to complete the scoring for SWOSU.
 
UMD scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth but Julianne Martinez and Mallory Davis combined to hold them off for the victory. Martinez pitched the first 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs after walking seven UMD batters. She picked up the win, improving to 5-7 while Davis tossed the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit to earn her first save of the season.
 
SWOSU had eight hits in the game, compared to nine for UMD, but the visitors left 13 batters on base in the game after Martinez worked her way out of a few crucial jams, including two bases-loaded situations.
 
 
SWOSU is now 6-18 on the year after the series, heading into a weekend Great American Conference series at home against Ouachita Baptist. The Bulldogs host OBU for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
