WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The SWOSU softball team had their chances to claim victory on Friday as they opened Great American Conference play against Arkansas-Monticello, but the Cotton Blossoms overcame deficits in both games to sweep the doubleheader.
UAM won the first game 10-7 before taking the Bulldogs to extra innings for an 8-6 victory in 10 innings in the nightcap. SWOSU is now 3-7 on the year and 0-2 to start conference play. They will again host UAM on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at noon from the Athletic Complex.

UAM struck for one run in the top of the first inning before SWOSU scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs took advantage of two Cotton Blossom errors in the first inning and scored three runs before getting RBI doubles from
Ashley Dunigan in the second inning and
Julianne Martinez in the third.
The lead would not last long as UAM scored four runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game. SWOSU scored one run in each the fifth and sixth innings bet the Cotton Blossoms offense could not be stopped late as they scored five runs in the last two innings to secure the game one victory.
Molly Vivo was 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and scored twice for SWOSU while
Adrienne Martinez,
Nikki Brandt and
Courtney Miller also had multi-hit games.
Julianne Martinez threw the entire game, allowing 12 hits and 10 earned runs to take the loss, falling to 2-3, despite striking out four.

SWOSU built a 5-2 lead heading into the seventh inning, but the Cotton Blossoms struck for three in the seventh to force extra innings. UAM scored again in the eighth before
Kendall Smith homered to lead off the bottom of the inning to extend the game.
The teams went into the 10th inning tied at 6-6, bringing the international tiebreaker into effect and UAM led off the inning with a two-run home run that would prove to be the difference. Vivo pitched a complete game, striking out ten while allowing 14 hits and seven earned runs. She also finished 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, but it was not enough to get the Bulldogs a victory.
Adrienne Martinez and
Caitlyn Deason also had three-hit games for the Bulldogs, who had 15 hits compared to 14 for UAM. Vivo took the loss and falls to 0-1 on the year.
