Softball Completes Play at 8-State Classic

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – SWOSU softball picked up a split on Saturday at the 8-State Classic in Bentonville before suffering two defeats on Sunday and finishing 2-4 at the tournament for the weekend.
 
Saturday games:
 
SWOSU 7, Rockhurst 1

Jordan Haney tossed a complete-game two hitter to propel the Bulldogs to the win in game one on Saturday. She earned the win after allowing two hits and one walk in 7.0 innings while also striking out one Rockhurst batter.
 
The top four batters in the SWOSU lineup combined for nine of the team's 11 hits for the game, with Nikki Brandt recording three hits in the game. Caitlyn Deason and Adrienne Martinez each had two RBI to lead the Dawgs.
 
Emporia State 9, SWOSU 6

After holding the Hornets offense scoreless through four innings, the Bulldogs allowed nine runs in the final three innings and suffered the defeat in Saturday's nightcap. Four errors in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed ESU to cap the comeback with a three-run walkoff home run.
 
Ashley Dunigan had two hits for the Bulldogs and Adrienne Martinez batted in two runs to lead the offense. Julianne Martinez took the loss despite allowing just six hits and two earned runs in 6.1 innings of work.
 
Sunday games:
 
Minnesota-Duluth 5, SWOSU 1

Adrienne Martinez's RBI double in the third inning got SWOSU within one at 2-1 but Minnesota-Duluth scored one run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the victory. The SWOSU offense was held down, recording just six hits in the game.
 
Mallory Davis was saddled with the loss after allowing eight hits and three earned runs in 5.0 innings.
 
Missouri Southern 7, SWOSU 2

The SWOSU offense was again held in check, this time by Missouri Southern, who allowed just two hits to the Bulldogs. Dunigan walked, stole second and eventually scored on a passed ball in the first inning  but the Lions responded by scoring in four consecutive innings to build their lead. The Bulldogs second run came on an RBI groundout from Martinez in the fifth.
 
Julianne Martinez got the start and threw the opening 4.0 innings, surrendering seven hits and four runs while striking out five.
 
 
The Bulldogs went 2-4 for the weekend and they are now 3-5 overall for the year. SWOSU returns home this weekend to open Great American Conference play against Arkansas-Monticello in a four-game series on Friday-Saturday.
