Western Oklahoma's bragging rights and a potential playoff spot are on the line this weekend as SWOSU hosts Northwestern Oklahoma State at the SWOSU Athletic Complex. The three-game GAC series kicks off Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm, followed by a pivotal Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.
Friday will be SWOSU's annual Pack the Park event with free food, drinks, and a chance at a $1,000 scholarship. Saturday will feature Senior Day where all seniors will be honored prior to the day's action.
The Dawgs enter the weekend with serious momentum after a strong April stretch that included a dominant 19-9 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State and a series sweep against Ouachita Baptist. SWOSU has won six of its last eight games, finding its rhythm at the plate just as the postseason race reaches its final turn. SWOSU's batted .320 as a team over that stretch.
Historically, the battle for the western half of the state has been narrowly controlled by the Bulldogs. As of late, the Rangers have had SWOSU's number, winning 12 of the last 15. The Bulldogs' last series win came in Alva in 2019. Despite the recent struggles, the Dawgs still hold a winning record at home, with an 11-7 record in Weatherford.
The SWOSU offense enters the series as one of the most potent in the league, currently boasting a team batting average of .328 which ranks among the top three in the conference. Individual standouts Kotaro Wakui and Landon Meyer lead the charge, as both players rank in the conference's top five for total hits with over 60 apiece through late April. Wakui batted .500 against Henderson State last weekend, 6-for-12, with an extra-base hit in every game of the series.
To secure the series, the Bulldogs' pitching staff must contain a Rangers lineup led by Chase Gordon and Joel Lindahl, who are both hitting near the .350 mark. SWOSU pitchers have been effective at home this season, and the team currently ranks in the top three of the GAC in total strikeouts as they look to neutralize the NWOSU power.
This matchup carries massive postseason implications as Northwestern currently sits one game ahead of the Dawgs in the GAC standings in the eighth and final playoff spot.
