ENID, Okla. – SWOSU Golf traveled to Enid to take on Northwestern in The Perkins Cup, a unique head-to-head event featuring Medal Match Play. Each Bulldog was paired against one Ranger in stroke play, with individual winners earning a point for their team. In the end, SWOSU retained the title with a 9-6 victory.
This marks the second year of the match play event against Northwestern, and the Bulldogs have now claimed the trophy both times. The Perkins Cup will return to Weatherford next fall.
SWOSU Women's Golf set the tone early, winning the first three matches by a combined 20 strokes. The effort was highlighted by a dominant performance from Maria Velilla, who cruised to a 14-stroke victory and never trailed. She carded a +3 (74), the second-lowest round among Lady Dawgs behind Freya Sala. Freshman Nerea Anton fell behind twice on the front nine but rebounded steadily to win her match by five.
London Wilson battled through the tightest contest of the day. She trailed or was tied through nine holes and carried just a one-stroke lead entering the final two, before sinking a clutch seven-foot putt on the last hole to clinch her point. After SWOSU dropped the fourth match, Sala responded with the lowest round on either side — a two-under 69 — winning by three. A double bogey early on settled her in, and she rebounded to play her final 15 holes at four under.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs split 5-5 with Northwestern but had already secured the overall team win. SWOSU's top of the lineup provided an early cushion by taking the first three matches that reached the clubhouse.
Brayden Duncan trailed early before drawing even on the ninth hole with a three-shot swing that flipped the match. He extended his lead to as many as six strokes and closed out a five-stroke victory.
Otto Heden followed with a four-shot win after starting five under through six holes.
Sutton McMillan carded a +8 (79) but still prevailed by six as his opponent struggled to find rhythm.
After a setback in the next pairing,
Caspar Graf delivered the clinching point with a six-stroke win, dominating the back nine.
Jack Phillips added the ninth and final point, maintaining control throughout and finishing with a two-shot win thanks to his +3 (74).
Both teams return to action October 20–21. The women will compete at the NCAA Central Region Preview in St. Joseph, Mo., while the men head to Monkey Island, Okla., for the Missouri Southern Invitational.
