ADA, Okla. – SWOSU Volleyball played their second conference game of the year – first on the road – on Thursday night, falling to East Central 3-2 in the second five set match in as many games.
After claiming the first two sets of the match, SWOSU could not close out ECU and eventually fell to the Tigers via a reverse sweep. The result of the match leaves the Dawgs at 1-1 in GAC play and at 5-6 overall and concludes the opening week of play in the GAC.
Early in the match the Dawgs were able to maintain control over the Tigers. After the first point of the match went to the Tigers, SWOSU did not look back and never trailed at any point in the set from that point on. The Bulldogs were able to rack up 17 kills in the set with five coming off the hand of Hailey Smith.
Set two was closely contested until the Dawgs lit fire at the 15-14 mark. A 10-4 run closed out the set which was highlighted by four kills in the last 10 points by Lacy Mott.
SWOSU was not able to complete the sweep as ECU came out swinging in the third set with a .273 hitting percentage, while the Dawgs were held to just .097 thanks to six blocks by the Tigers.
The Dawgs were not able to regain rhythm in the fourth in a set they were never able to take a lead in. SWOSU rattled off a mini run to make the score 21-22 but a late burst from ECU allowed them to push it to five, winning the fourth set 25-22.
Set five saw more of the same from ECU, riding the momentum built previously into the win. They hit a match high .296 and controlled things the entire way through to win it 15-10.
Mott (.236) led the Dawgs with 19 kills in the match. Courtney Crownover (10) and Paris Patterson (10) each reached double digit kills.
Terez Chavez (29) and Cameron Turner (21) combined for 50 assists while Keke Holloway posted a career high 24 digs to lead the defense.
SWOSU will look to get back on track on Tuesday, October 1st at 6:00 pm in Alva against rival Northwestern Oklahoma State.
