ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The SWOSU women's basketball team had a three-game win streak snapped after falling to Ouachita Baptist 67-62 on Thursday night. The Lady Bulldogs were behind the eight ball early after a slow start, but fought back in the second half before falling just short.
The loss drops SWOSU to 12-9 and 9-6 in Great American Conference play. They'll stay in Arkadelphia and play their Saturday contest across the street at Henderson State.
OUA could do no wrong in the early going after the tipoff. The Tigers hit their first four shots and held SWOSU scoreless for an early 9-0 advantage, which also ended up being their largest lead of the game. Offensive troubles stalled any defensive stops that the Lady Dawgs got after SWOSU shot 4-of-20 in the first quarter. SWOSU didn't have a field goal until six minutes into the game and trailed 18-12 after the first.
More stops came in the second quarter, but the offensive output stayed the same. At halftime, the Lady Bulldogs shooting splits were 22.2% from the field and 7.7% from three.
SWOSU outscored the Tigers 23-16 over the third quarter, taking their first lead of the game with seven seconds left in the period. An Ouachita Baptist three-pointer that beat the third quarter buzzer stole the momentum that the Lady Bulldogs built.
SWOSU retook the lead midway through the fourth at 54-52, but it would be their last lead of the game. Ouachita outscored SWOSU 15-8 over the final 5:01. The Lady Bulldogs needed a stop with 30 seconds left and down by two when a three-pointer on a busted possession put the dagger on their comeback attempt.
Coming into the game, the Lady Bulldogs were 5-0 when forcing 25 or more turnovers. SWOSU's cold shooting, paired with 25 Ouachita offensive rebounds – a new SWOSU opponent high – was a recipe for disaster.
Mason Jones,
Chloe Cantrell, and
Averi Zinn put in 10 points apiece. Zinn added five rebounds and four steals as well.
Lanie Gooch snatched 10 rebounds.
