SWOSU Hoists Hardware at NSU Women’s Classic; Sala Ties for Top Spot

Broken Arrow, Okla. – SWOSU Women's Golf competed in the NSU Women's Classic on Monday and Tuesday this week and came away with a first-place team finish thanks to three top-15 finishers including Freya Sala who finished with a share of the individual lead.

It's the first event win since the Lady Bulldogs claimed the NCAA Central Region Championship back in 2019.

Sala held a share of the lead after Monday's opening round at one-under but found herself trailing the top spot by one stroke with one hole to go on Tuesday before a birdie boosted her final score to three-under par and allowed her to finish tied for first. Harding's Pilar Martinez went on to edge Sala in a playoff hole to be classified as the individual title holder, though both finished with identical scores at the conclusion of the event. Sala's final scorecard showed rounds of 71 and 70.

She becomes the latest Lady Bulldog to finish in the top spot individually at a tournament. The previous holder of that recognition was teammate Megan Brown who won an event back in 2022.

Rebecca Lau finished inside the top-5 after shooting one-under 71 on Tuesday and sat at even par for the two-day event. She had a scoring average of 4.75 on par fives, the lowest number of any player for the tournament.

Drew Dodgion, coming off the best finish of her career a week ago, began the tournament slow with an opening round 80 (+8) but bounced back on Tuesday with an even-par 72 to finish tied for 15th overall. She moved up 30 spots on the leaderboard after day one – the biggest move of any player in the tournament.

Ashlyn Acosta (+12) and Anna Marksa (+22) rounded out the leaderboard for the Dawgs. Both shot lower first rounds than second. Both also birdied on the back nine on the final day of the competition.

The Lady Dawgs will be off for two weeks before heading up to Bartlesville, Okla. to compete in the NCAA Regional Preview, hosted by Rogers State, on September 25-26.
