RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – SWOSU swept this week's Great American Conference Golfer of the Week honors, with
Maria Velilla and
Ryan Carlisle earning the women's and men's awards, respectively.
It marks the second weekly recognition of the season for Velilla, while Carlisle claims the first GAC honor of his career and becomes the first SWOSU men's golfer to receive the award this year.
Velilla captured the individual title at the NCAA Central Region Preview on Tuesday in a field of 105 golfers. The freshman shot a two-round total of 148 (+4), highlighted by an even-par 72 in the final round at St. Joseph Country Club. She led the field in pars (25) and ranked tied for second in average score on both par 3s and par 4s. In four stroke-play tournaments this fall, Velilla has recorded three top-10 finishes, including two in the top five.
Carlisle turned in his best finish as a Bulldog (T-12) at the Missouri Southern Invitational at Shangri-La Resort in northeastern Oklahoma. His four-under 68 in the second round was the third-lowest score by any of the 100 golfers in any round of the tournament. Carlisle played both halves of the course under par in that round and added an eagle on hole 16. He finished the event with seven birdies or better and 34 pars—just one shy of the tournament lead.
Both Carlisle and Velilla will wrap up their fall schedules next week at the Tulsa Cup (Oct. 27–28). The men will compete at The Club at Indian Springs, while the women will play at Forest Ridge Golf Course.
