GUYMON, Okla. – SWOSU Rodeo saw its women team claim the fourth rodeo win of the season after taking the top spot by a decisive margin at the Panhandle State Rodeo this weekend. Meanwhile, the men's team narrowly missed also winning and finished second place behind Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
The women's rodeo team is crowned the 2022-23 Central Plains Region Champion and will send four cowgirls to the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) to compete as a team in June. Those names will include
Abby Hepper,
Libby Berger,
Cheyenne VandeStouwe, and
Alli Masters.
Hepper won the Women's All-Around at OPSU after a top-10 finish in Breakaway Roping and a second place in Barrel Racing. She finishes as the region's 2022-23 Barrel Racing Reserve Champion. Her horse, Sam, was also named the Women's Horse of the Year in the region.
The men's team got a pair of top finishes this weekend from
Brody McAbee and
Hunter Tate. McAbee won the long round and finished second in the short go. Tate had an 84-point ride in the long round that was able to hold even after a no-score in the short go.
McAbee finishes as the region's Saddle Bronc Champion.
Marley Berger also finishes as the region champion in Tie Down Roping for a second consecutive year. He was third in the average this weekend at OPSU.
Dustin Sanchez did not score at OPSU but finishes as the Reserve Champion in Bull Riding.. Tate was right behind Sanchez in third place in the region.
McAbee, Berger, Sanchez, and Tate will all compete at the CNFR on the men's side -- held in Casper, Wyoming June 11-17.
