RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Following a career game against Arkansas Tech, senior defensive lineman RJ Powell has been honored as the Great American Conference Defensive Player of the Week for week six.
Powell (Sayre, Okla.) made his presence known against the Wonder Boys with career highs in tackles, 11, and both sacks and tackles for loss, 2.5. His sack fumble in the first quarter was recovered by the Bulldogs and set up a touchdown throw just three plays later. Eight of Powell's 11 tackles came as solo tackles.
He now has 6.0 sacks this season, which ties him for the GAC lead. SWOSU's 16 sacks as a team is also tied for second most in the league.
This is the first weekly conference honor of the season for any Bulldog and the first on defense since week 11 of last season. SWOSU had a league leading eight conference players of the week in 2022 which included two on defense.
The season continues this Saturday at home when SWOSU hosts Oklahoma Baptist for an afternoon 2:00 pm kickoff in Weatherford.
