SHAWNEE, Okla. – SWOSU Women's Basketball trailed 64-51 with 6:26 left to play in the game on Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist, before closing the game on a 20-4 run to leave Shawnee with the victory.
"My team was resilient today and I couldn't be prouder," Head Coach Kelsi Musick stated in her post-game press conference. "Learning how to win in these tight games will benefit us come post season time too. As much as we don't want to play in them, they are good for us."
The win marks SWOSU's third win in a row and moves the Dawgs to 18-4 on the season and 12-2 in GAC play.
Morgan Smith was a huge reason for the fourth quarter surge. She scored 11 of her 20 points in the final quarter when SWOSU needed baskets badly – and all of those came after they trailed by a game high 13 points midway through.
Trailing by their largest margin in the game with a little over half of the quarter left to play, SWOSU dug in on defense and got stops while the offense started rolling. Bethany Franks got the comeback started with a jump shot, and then it was all Smith the next 11 points. She hit a step back three, a jump shot from the elbow, and back-to-back long balls over the next two and a half minutes and SWOSU trailed by just two with 2:49 to go.
After the Dawgs briefly grabbed the lead with layups by Franks and Makyra Tramble, OBU finally answered with a game-tying bucket at 68-68 with 36 seconds left.
Foul shots by Lauren Ramey to take the lead and by Macy Gore to extend the lead were the final three points scored in the game. SWOSU also got the stops they needed on the defensive end.
Prior to the fourth quarter, both teams could not get away from each other. The Lady Bulldogs led 26-22 at halftime, before entering the final quarter trailing by a single point. SWOSU was only able to grow a lead as large as six in the contest.
SWOSU shot just 37% from the field in the game and 32% from beyond the arc, compared to 44% and 50% respectively from Oklahoma Baptist. Despite being outshot, the Dawgs made up ground by outrebounding the Lady Bison 44-33, including 17-3 on the offensive boards which translated to 16 second chance points.
Tramble nearly had herself a triple-double in the contest after finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists. Gore (12) and Ramey (10) were SWOSU's other two double-digit scorers.
SWOSU will return to action in a quick turnaround this week, on Monday (Feb. 7) at Southeastern in a makeup game due to COVID protocols.
