BETHANY, Okla. – SWOSU Men's Basketball closes out 2022 with one final conference game on the road against Southern Nazarene this Saturday, December 17. The Bulldogs will look to continue building momentum heading into Christmas Break after earning their first GAC win of the season last week against ECU.
Bulldog Notes
- The Bulldogs got back to their recipe for success last week with defense. In five wins this season, SWOSU is holding opponents to 64.8 points per game. Compared to 93.5 points per game in four losses
- Another flavor the Bulldogs love to add to the mix is offensive rebounding. The team is averaging 13.9 offensive boards per game which leads the GAC and ranks tied for 16th in Division II. They grabbed 19 against East Central last week and have had just one game all season in which they've failed to surpass double digit offensive rebounding
- Winning the turnover battle is important and SWOSU does it better than anyone in the league so far through nine games. The Bulldogs force 17.7 turnovers per game on defense and turn the ball over 12.9 times per game themselves – good for a +4.78 margin
- SWOSU ranks eighth in all of NCAA Division II in steals, averaging 10.4 per game
- Nate Goodlow is a big reason for the steal number. He averages 2.7 per game which sits him tied for seventh in D2
- This will be SWOSU's second road conference game of the season. The first was a 112-87 loss at Southeastern. The Dawgs are 2-1 overall so far in games played away from the Pioneer Cellular Event Center
- Dating back to the start of the Division II era, SWOSU is 7-17 against SNU but the Bulldogs have claimed two of the last three contests including a 66-58 win in the GAC Tournament Championship last March
- Junior forward Ben Smith picked up the first GAC Player of the Week honor of his career this past week following a strong double-double performance against ECU. He scored 20 points, a season high, and came down with a career best 13 rebounds in what was the first double-double of his career
- Kamden Gipson was slowed offensively against ECU but continues to lead the team in scoring at 13.3 points per game. He also has a team high 34 assists, ranking him seventh in the GAC at 3.8 assists per game
- DeAngelo Adkins is seventh in the GAC at 6.9 rebounds per game and tied for first in the league with 1.8 blocks per game
Scouting Southern Nazarene
The preseason favorites entering 2022-23 are a perfect 3-0 to start GAC play and are 6-2 overall this season. They're led by a trio of double-figure scorers including Tyler McGhie whose 16.3 points ranks fifth in the league. Alongside McGhie is Nick Davis who is the conference's eighth most efficient scorer at 61.5% from the field while also ranking fourth in rebounding at 7.4 boards per game. Both players are returning faces from last season. Southern Nazarene is coached by 15-year veteran Adam Bohac. Since 1997 when SWOSU transitioned to Division II, they are 3-9 against SNU in Bethany.
