Bulldog Men’s Basketball Looks to Continue Hot Start

PREVIEW

• The second round of Great American Conference Divisional Play begins this weekend as the Bulldog Men’s Basketball team heads to Durant on Thursday to face Southeastern Oklahoma State before hosting East Central on Saturday afternoon

• SWOSU will then go to Alva to face Northwestern Oklahoma State on Monday and Shawnee to meet Oklahoma Baptist on January 28th before closing out the round at home against Southern Nazarene on January 30th

• The Dawgs are off to their best start since the 2015-16 season, going 3-1 during the first round of divisional play while missing one game due to COVID-19 protocols 

• In going 3-1 to open the season, the Bulldogs snapped eight-game losing streaks against both Southeastern and Southern Nazarene, picking up their first win at SNU in Bethany since 2014

• By order of the Great American Conference Council of Presidents, there will be no fans allowed in attendance for indoor sporting events during the month of January

SWOSU NOTES

• Through four games, the Bulldogs lead the Great American Conference and rank 18th in NCAA Division II with a scoring average of 85.5 points per game and they’re outscoring opponents by an average of 6.2 points

• Reigning GAC Newcomer of the Year Damion Thornton has had a strong start to his junior season at SWOSU as he’s currently the second-highest scorer in the conference (20.3 ppg) while ranking second in NCAA Division II with 12.8 rebounds per game

• Thornton has matched his career-high with 14 rebounds in three of the first four games and he pulled down nine boards at SNU to just miss on a fourth straight double-double

• Tauriawn Knight knocked down seven three-pointers in his first game as a Bulldog and he’s 13-of-28 (46.4%) from long range for the year, ranking third in the league for three-point field goals made

• Chris Braggs, Jr., has come off the bench to score at least 12 points in each game this season and he’s averaging 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 55.2% (16-29) from the field

• Bralyn James scored a career-high 18 points, including a clutch three-pointer, in the win at SNU and he’s had at least 10 points in three of the first four games

• Kamden Gipson ranks second in the conference with 10 steals and he’s got season averages of 7.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game

• SWOSU’s defensive pressure has been a big reason for their strong start and the Dawgs are ranked sixth in NCAA Division II with a turnover margin of +7.2 per game
