ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After hitting a driving lay-in as time expired to force overtime,
Makyra Tramble hit two three-pointers in the extra session to lift the SWOSU Women's Basketball team past Henderson State 77-70 on Thursday night at the Duke Wells Center.
SWOSU led by as many as seven points in the third quarter, but they trailed 56-53 with 3:52 to play.
Lauren Ramey dropped in a three-pointer in front of the SWOSU bench to tie the game and jump start an 8-0 run that left put the Lady Dawgs up 61-51 with 1:09 to play. After HSU scored with 39 seconds left to make it a three-point game, a wild sequence ensued that ended with the game going to overtime.
Taber Beer was fouled and went to the line with 26 seconds to play, but missed both attempts, which allowed Henderson State to tie the game on a 3-pointer with 13 seconds to play. Beer then rushed the ball up the court, but her shot was blocked and ended up in the hands of HSU's Karrington Whaley, who was fouled by
Bethany Franks and went to the line with four seconds to play. Whaley made both free throws to put the Reddies up 63-61 before SWOSU called a timeout to advance the ball into the front court.
After the timeout, SWOSU put the ball in the hands of Tramble, who created a shot for herself and knocked it down to tie the score at 63-all as time expired. SWOSU never trailed in overtime after Tramble hit two three-pointers in the first 75 seconds of the extra session. The Lady Bulldogs lead was at least four points the rest of the way as they hit 8-of-10 free throws to secure the victory.
Tramble led the way for SWOSU with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds while
Tyra Aska also had a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. In overtime, Aska also scored her 1,500th career point, becoming the sixth player in program history to reach that plateau.
Bethany Franks was one rebound shy of yet another double-double as she scored 16 points to go along with nine boards.
SWOSU improves to 18-7 on the year and 13-6 in Great American Conference play and they are now alone in third place in the league standings, one game behind Harding and Southeastern in first. The Lady Bulldogs close out their weekend road trip to Arkadelphia on Saturday against Ouachita.
