WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Behind 25 points, eight rebounds and five steals from
Damion Thornton, the SWOSU Men's Basketball team picked up their second straight win by taking down Ouachita 67-61 on Thursday night at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
SWOSU shot 30% from the field in the first half and hit just 3-of-20 three-point attempts, but they were still able to overcome an early 10-point deficit to lead 31-29 at the break. The Bulldogs attempted just 18 field goals in the second half, but they were effective in getting to the free throw line and converted 18-of-27 opportunities, which was just enough to hold off the Tigers by six.
Thornton was the catalyst on Thursday, scoring 25 points on just 11 field goal attempts while connecting on 11-of-13 free throws. He matched
Anthony Love for the team lead with eight rebounds and recorded 11 of SWOSU's five steals in the game, including one late in the game that he turned into a fast break opportunity to help the Dawgs seal the victory.
Kamden Gipson chipped in 14 points while
Dominique Primer had 13 points in 17 minutes of action off the bench.
With the win, SWOSU has now recorded back-to-back Great American Conference victories for the first time since February 2016 and they improve to 7-6 overall while moving within one game of .500 in league play at 3-4. Next up for the Dawgs is a meeting with Henderson State at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
