Dawgs Fall to Kingsville in Fifth Set

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Volleyball got a career-high 24 kills from freshman outside hitter Maicee Morgan, but Monday's back-and-forth battle with Texas A&M-Kingsville went the way of the visitors as the Javelinas took the match in five sets.

Kingsville jumped on SWOSU from the outset and led wire-to-wire as they took the first set 25-16 for the early lead. The Bulldogs flipped the script the next two sets and combined for 30 kills to take a 2-1 lead with wins of 25-21 and 25-16. Kingsville would not go away easily, however, tying the match at 2-2 with a 25-21 win in the fourth that sent SWOSU to five sets for just the second time this season.

Texas A&M-Kingsville seized control of the deciding set from the outset, scoring the first five points and leading 8-1 at the turn, at which point the Bulldogs had exhausted both of their timeout. SWOSU would then get a kill form Morgan and score the next four points on her serve to get to within two points at 8-6. Following a Kingsville timeout, the Javelinas would end the rally before back-to-back kills from Emily Wood made it a one-point set at 9-8. That would be as close as the Dawgs could get, however, as Kingsville scored five of the final six points to close out the set at 15-9.

SWOSU had more kills than Kingsville (60-52), but they gave back those points and more with 15 service errors, compared to five by the Javelinas. Kingsville had more digs than the Dawgs (80-72) while each team finished with nine blocks in the match.

Morgan led the Bulldogs with a new career-high of 24 kills, which ties for the sixth-highest single match total in program history. She attacked at a .267 clip with eight attack errors in 60 swings while also serving up two aces and recording three digs. Wood joined her in double figures with 12 kills and added a double-double with 12 digs. Kaitlyn Dillon led SWOSU with 26 digs while Allie Hoang had a team-best 47 assists and Jenny Tackett had seven assist blocks.

SWOSU, now 6-7 on the year, resumes Great American Conference play on Thursday evening in Shawnee against Oklahoma Baptist.
