WEATHERFORD, Okla. – One week in advance of the season opener, SWOSU Head Football Coach
Chet Pobolish unveiled the Bulldogs first depth chart on Thursday.
Among the notable position battles throughout camp was under center, where Pobolish has named senior
Tyler Marr as the Bulldogs starting quarterback. Marr is in his fifth year at SWOSU, having competed in 22 games over the past three seasons with two starts late in the 2017 season. For his career, he's completed 52.4% of his passes for 597 yards and four touchdowns. His top performance to date came on Homecoming 2017 as he threw for a career-best 234 yards and the game-winning touchdown as the Bulldogs came-from-behind to defeat Southern Nazarene.
"All throughout camp, Tyler has been the most consistent guy leading our offense," Pobolish said. "He has waited his turn and learned from the quarterbacks before him and it's now his time to lead our offense. I look forward to watching him continue to grow during his senior season."
Marr is one of eight seniors listed atop their position on offense, including returning starters
Jared Rayburn,
Corey Ganz,
Calton Bakker and
Alex Ramirez. The Bulldogs also return sophomore offensive lineman
Brock Mason, who started all 11 games last season between right guard and left guard. Newcomers to claim a starting position on offense include redshirt freshman offensive linemen
Billy Nunn and
Riley Mize, junior transfer
Justin Bailey and graduate transfer
Tristian Houston.
Defensively, the Bulldogs are set to start upperclassmen in each spot in the front seven with seniors
Malcolm Davis and
Jacob Rodman joined by juniors
Reggie Mayes, Jr.,
Isaiah Brown,
Jonathan Harris,
Wesley Mathis and
Dalton Cooper. The secondary is a much younger group with three true sophomores in
Rahzel Young,
Derrius Franklin and
Jalen Carr joined by free safety
Braden Sweet, who moved back after playing an outside linebacker position last season.
On Special Teams, SWOSU returns kicker
Ryan Buchanan, punter
Kane Bowen and longsnapper
Connor MacArthur from last season while Rayburn, Bailey, Carr and sophomore transfer
Donnell Hawkins are among the players expected to contribute in the return game.
"We are excited to get the season underway in Durant next Thursday and I think we've had a good fall camp to prepare us for the year," Pobolish said. "Southeastern is an exceptional opponent with a lot of returning players, so this presents a great challenge to begin the year. I know our guys are ready to get out there and Spot the Ball against a new opponent."
SWOSU Football opens the 2019 season next Thursday evening, September 5th against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 5:30 pm from Paul Laird Field and fans unable to attend can follow along by listening to new '
Voice of the Bulldogs' Stephen McTeer anchor the coverage live on 1003.FM, 95.5FM HD2 or online at kweyam.com.
