ENID, Okla. – For the seventh time in eight seasons, the SWOSU Baseball team will compete at the Great American Conference Tournament and they've drawn a first-round matchup with No. 3-seed Arkansas Tech. That game will be played on Saturday evening at 7:00 pm at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid.
SWOSU enters the postseason having won six straight games to close out the regular season and eight-of-nine contests in their final three GAC series. The Bulldogs are 24-21 overall and tied for fourth in the conference standings at 20-13, claiming the No. 4 seed on a tiebreaker over Oklahoma Baptist. Arkansas Tech is 28-21 overall and finished just ahead of the Bulldogs with a 20-12 mark in conference play, but SWOSU won the season series 3-0 over the Wonder Boys.
Entering the postseason, SWOSU is hitting .282 as a team, with
Rafael Villela leading the team with a .384 batting average while
Alex Bedard is the team-leader in hits (63), runs scored (59) doubles (20), triples (5) and stolen bases (26). Senior shortstop
Alex Pimentel has chipped in a team-best 38 RBI on 61 hits while
Sawyer Toole and
Tanner Long are tied for the team lead with six home runs apiece.
On the mount,
Tyler Tuck and
Cooper Cantwell have been the Dawgs primary starters with a host of others contributing from the bullpen. Tuck is 7-2 with a 4.14 ERA and three complete games – two shutouts – two his credit while Cantwell is a two-time GAC Pitcher of the Week with a 4.57 ERA and a 6-4 record.
Gabe Jacobo has been the third weekend starter down the stretch of the season and he's coming off his best outing, a complete-game with four runs allowed and nine strikeouts last Friday night at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
The Bulldogs are 1-12 all-time at the GAC Tournament, with their first victory coming last season in the opening round as they defeating Arkansas-Monticello 13-8. SWOSU is 0-5 all-time against ATU in the tournament, including a 9-5 elimination game defeat against the Wonder Boys last season.
