Braden Sweet Selected as First Team Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas – The 2019 Academic All-America® Division II Football team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), was announced on Tuesday, with SWOSU senior Braden Sweet among the student-athletes earning a First Team Academic All-America selection.

Sweet is now the second player in program history to become a two-time Academic All-American after earning Second Team honors following the 2017 season and he joins former teammate Brandon Roe as the only Bulldog Football players to have been chosen as First Team Academic All-Americans. Sweet shares the second-highest GPA on the first team with a 3.98 undergraduate grade point average while earning an Accounting degree, which he earned in May. Sweet has since begun work on a master's of Business Administration and he has a current graduate GPA of 4.00.

The 25 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II football first team members hold a composite 3.85 GPA. Eight first team honorees hold a 3.95 or better cumulative GPA. Thirteen Academic All-America® Division II football selections are repeat picks with seven of the veterans making the 2019 first team.

A senior defensive back from Perry, Okla., Sweet led the Bulldog Football team and ranked fifth in the Great American Conference with 98 tackles (52 solo, 46 assist) during the 2019 season. He also totaled 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one fumble recovery and three pass breakups as a senior. Sweet started 30 games for the Bulldogs over the past three seasons and finished with 192 career tackles.

Sweet is SWOSU's third Academic All-American of the NCAA Division II era, joining Cameron Nix (2016) and Brandon Roe (2017-18).

The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2019-20 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
