SHAWNEE, Okla. – After closing to within one score in the final minute of the first half, SWOSU was held scoreless in the second half as they dropped a 35-21 decision at Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday at Crain Family Stadium in Shawnee.
The teams traded scoring plays in the first half until the Bison got consecutive scoring runs from reigning GAC Offensive Player of the Week Tyler Steuver, the second of which covered 87 yards and made it 28-14 late in the half. SWOSU answered with a five-play scoring drive capped off with a one-yard plunge from
Jermaine Mask that sent the Dawgs to the locker room trailing 28-21.
SWOSU had opportunities in the second half, but they were unable to score after losing two fumbles and turning the ball over on downs on their final possession. OBU pushed their lead back to two scores early in the fourth quarter on a four-yard touchdown run after a SWOSU turnover. The highlight for the Dawgs in the second half was cornerback
Jalen Carr, who picked off two passes from OBU quarterback Preston Haire to halt Bison scoring opportunities.
The Bulldogs rolled up 362 yards of offense, with
Tyler Marr completing 15-of-27 passes for 185 yards while
Jermaine Mask led the Dawgs in rushing with 51 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Justin Bailey hauled in five receptions for 79 yards and tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to
Alex Ramirez in the first quarter.
SWOSU surrendered 494 yards to OBU, who threw for 316 yards and one touchdown while rushing for three touchdowns and 178 yards.
Landis Morris led the Bulldogs with eight tackles while
Rahzel Young had six stops, including a sack.
Now 3-7 on the year, SWOSU Football concludes the 2019 season next Saturday at Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva.
