WEATHERFORD, Okla. – After winning the first two sets against Arkansas-Monticello on Friday night, the Bulldog Volleyball team was pushed to the fifth set, where they raced past the Cotton Blossoms 15-7 to finish off the match for their second straight victory.
The fifth set saw three ties, but SWOSU never trailed and took the lead for good at 5-4.
Jenny Tackett had several key moments in the fifth, including a monster block at 6-4 and a kill on the slide that sent the teams to the turn with SWOSU leading 8-5.
Emily Wood then took command with three straight kills, putting SWOSU within two points of closing it out when
Brylee Burroughs got a kill to force match point, which came to the Dawgs via an attack error by the Blossoms.
SWOSU hit above .190 in each set, putting away at least 10 kills in each set, while committing no more than five attack errors in any frame. The Bulldogs got 70 kills on the night and just 17 attack errors, hitting .272 as a team behind a monster night from
Maicee Morgan, who finished with 20 kills and nine digs while committing just one error and hitting .380.
Sofia Gruden added 12 kills without an attack error while
Brylee Burroughs had 13 and
Jenny Tackett added 11 with three errors apiece. Burroughs also led SWOSU with three blocks while Tackett and Gruden had two apiece.
The Bulldogs had a slight advantage in kills (70-68) while attacking more efficiently to overcome having fewer blocks, service aces and digs in the match.
Kaitlyn Dillon led the Dawgs with 26 digs while
Allie Hoang had a double-double with 58 assists and 12 digs and
Josie Pumphrey also reached double figures with 10 digs.
SWOSU (8-8, 4-2 GAC) will return to action on Saturday morning, hosting Southern Arkansas at 11:00 am inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
