Brandon Roe Named First Team Academic All-American

AUSTIN, Texas – For the third consecutive season, SWOSU Football is represented on the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II football team as senior offensive lineman Brandon Roe has been selected as the first, First Team Academic All-American in program history.

The Google Cloud Academic All-America Team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and was announced on Tuesday. The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.

Roe, a senior from Choctaw, Okla., is now SWOSU Football's first two-time Academic All-American after earning Second Team honors following the 2017 season and he is one of just seven two-time selections on the 2018 Academic All-American team. He has maintained an unblemished 4.0 grade point average in his time at SWOSU, balancing a major in Engineering Technology with being a starting offensive lineman for the Bulldogs since the midpoint of his freshman season. This season, Roe battled through injuries to start 10 games at left guard for the Bulldogs, giving him 40 games started in his SWOSU career.

"I'm absolutely honored to be named an Academic All-American for the second time. It's been an amazing five years here at SWOSU and I've had a lot of fun playing for the Bulldogs," Roe said upon learning of his selection. "A lot of time and effort goes into balancing school work with football so what I've learned is you get out of it what you put into it. You have to work hard and stay focused, but if stick with it then the hard work pays off."

The 26 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II football first team members hold a composite 3.883 GPA. Five first team honorees hold a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA. Nine Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II football selections are repeat picks from the 2017 honor squads with seven of the veterans making the 2018 first team.

"This is an incredible accomplishment for Brandon Roe, who has proven to be the ultimate student-athlete that succeeds both on the field and in the classroom," SWOSU Head Coach Chet Pobolish said. "The ability to balance an Engineering Technology degree while rarely missing a snap speaks to his toughness and determination to succeed. Brandon has been a role model for others in our program and his impact will be felt for years to come."

SWOSU Football has now had four players named to the Academic All-American team in the program's NCAA Division II era, with all four coming in the past three seasons. In addition to Roe's selections in 2017 and 2018, SWOSU's other Academic All-American's are second team selections Cameron Nix (2016) and Braden Sweet (2017).
