BETHANY, Okla. – Southern Nazarene scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes to defeat SWOSU 35-23 on Saturday afternoon at the SNU Football Stadium in Bethany.
The Bulldogs used two touchdown runs by
Jaden Knowles to build a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, with SNU cutting it in half to 13-7 at the break. The Crimson Storm returned the opening kickoff of the second half 91 yards for a touchdown, the lone score in the third quarter as SNU took a 14-13 lead to the fourth.
The fourth quarter featured four lead changes, the first of which came on the opening play of the quarter as
Casey Freeman found
Jared Rayburn on a wheel route for a 35-yard touchdown that put the Dawgs back on top. That lead was short lived, however, with SNU needing just three plays to cover 75 yards and answer on a fumble recovery for a touchdown that made it 21-20 with 13:26 to play.
Ryan Buchanan put the Bulldogs on top 23-21 with a 45-yard field goal with 8:38 to play and interceptions by
Dalton Cooper and
Jalen Carr halted the next two SNU drives and left the Dawgs with possession and a two-point lead with 5:25 to play. SWOSU was unable to get a first down on their next drive and punted it back to SNU at their 41 yard line with 3:37 to play.
SWOSU's defense was unable to come up with a third straight stop, with SNU driving 59 yards on five plays to score the go-ahead touchdown on a 38-yard run with 1:46 to play, making it 29-23 following a two-point conversion. Freeman was intercepted on the opening play of the next drive, but the Bulldogs got a stop to get the ball back with 31 seconds to play. The first play of that drive was also intercepted and this one was returned 26 yards for a touchdown, allowing SNU to put the game away.
Marcus Anderson II led the Bulldogs with 78 rushing yards on 15 attempts while
Jaden Knowles rushed for 22 yards and two scores on 11 carries.
DJ Hicks was the top pass catcher, hauling in five receptions for 82 yards while
Jared Rayburn went for 71 yards and one touchdown on four catches.
Casey Freeman finished 17-for-36 for 209 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.
Defensively, the Bulldogs recorded five takeaways in the game, getting two interceptions by
Jalen Carr and one apiece from
Dalton Cooper and
CJ Jennings along with a fumble recovery credited to
Garrett Kilpatrick.
Gerald White and
Jacob Rodman led the Bulldogs with six tackles apiece.
Following their second consecutive setback, the Bulldogs fall to 3-7 on the year heading into next Saturday's season finale against Northwestern Oklahoma State. That game is the culmination of Homecoming at Southwestern Oklahoma State University with kickoff set for 5:30 pm at ASAP Energy Field.
